New Croton Aqueduct was built over the High Bridge between the Bronx and Yonkers in 1862. It was needed to meet the increased water needs of New York City and operated until 1917. Designed as a gravity feed system, its graded slope dropped 13 inches per mile for the 41 miles between the Croton River in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains and NYC
