Newspaper report of the detention of Confederate diplomats, James Mason and John Slidell, that caused the Trent Affair. They were brought on board the United States warship San Jacinto as prisoners, Nov. 8, 1861, by Union Captain Charles Wilkes. This action violated British sovereignty by stopping and boarding the RMS Trent, and arresting the two passengers. After two months of international crisis, the US authorities released Mason and Slidell, allowing them to sail to London from Boston on Jan 14, 1862
