NOVA VIRGINIAE TABULA, 1635, by Dutch master map-maker, Willem Janszoon Blaeu, based on John Smiths 1614 first map. It accurately depicts the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. Blaeu has added colored decorative elements, and a scene of Powhatans capture of Captain John Smith. At right there is an Indian warrior, whose depiction is based on images of John White and Theodor de Bry
