Old timers placer mining in South Dakotas Black Hills, in 1889. The first gold rush began in 1874, when gold strikes were reported in the Black Hills within the Great Sioux Reservation. After the Lakotas (Sioux) defeat by the US Army, the Black Hills were ceded to the US in the treaty of 1877 (BSLOC_2017_18_55)
