Osceola, Native American Seminole Chief, by George Catlin, painted in January 1838. Osceola was imprisoned by the US Army and was suffering from malaria when he posed for Catlin. The portrait depicts his feathered hat, and embroidered sash over patterned fabric. Around his neck are three crescent-shaped ceremonial metal gorgets
