Oswego, New York, in a Birds-eye view of the mouth of the Oswego River at Lake Ontario, 1855. These were boom years for the port, which was connected to the Eire Canal at Syracuse by the 24 mile long Oswego Canal, which opened in 1830. Through the 1850s and 1860s, it was a busy port for shipping Midwestern grain and Canadian salt for export. At lower right is Fort Ontario, a former fur trading post, and military position in the French and Indian War and the War of 1812
