Park Chung-hee and retired General Douglas MacArthur
Park Chung-hee and retired General Douglas MacArthur shake hands. They met at MacArthur's Waldorf Astoria tower apartment in New York City, Nov. 18, 1961. Park was then the leader of a military coup d'tat that overthrew the weak Korean Second Republic in 1961. He was elected as President of the Korean Third Republic in 1963, and was an increasingly authoritarian ruler until his 1979 assassination. (CSU_2015_7_299)
