Pawnee lodges at Loup, Nebraska, with an Indian family standing in front of the entrance. 1873 photo by William H. Jackson. The supporting structure was a strong wood post and beam frame, over which thin branches were woven, and then covered with earth. The entrance insulates the interior from the cold, and protects by keeping intruding beasts and humans within a defensible zone. The building was strong enough for several people to sit on its roof
