Pearl Mesta, Washington, D.C. political hostess, at her desk, ca. 1949. In 1925, at age 36, she was widowed with $78 million fortune. Mesta was an early supporter of Harry Truman, who rewarded her with the Ambassadorship to Luxembourg.
