Pearl Mesta, Washington, D.C. political hostess, at her desk, ca. 1949. In 1925, at age 36, she was widowed with $78 million fortune. Mesta was an early supporter of Harry Truman, who rewarded her with the Ambassadorship to Luxembourg. She was portrayed by Ethel Merman in the 1950 Irving Berlin Broadway musical comedy and the 1953 film, CALL ME MADAME. (CSU_2015_11_1637)
