In 1893, US government pressured the Cherokee Indians to accept $8.6 million for the 228-mile long, 58-mile wide Cherokees Strip. After subdividing the land into 1/4 square mile plots, the General Land Office opened to land to settlement under the 1862 Homestead Act.
