Philippe Bunau-Varilla aided US President Theodore Roosevelts provocation of the Panama Revolution. The representative of earlier French Panama Canal construction (1881-94), facilitated the signing of the Hay-Bunau-Varilla Treaty, Nov. 6, 1903. In the treaty, the US recognized the independence of Panama from Columbia, and defined terms for the construction of the Panama Canal (BSLOC_2017_4_64)
