PLAQUE WARRIOR AND ATTENDANTS, 16th-17th c. Nigeria, Africa, Court of Benin, sculpture, cast brass. This work hung on the exterior of the royal palace in Benin City. In center is a warrior chief, flanked by soldier attendants of lesser rank. The chief has leopard-spot scarification marks, a leopard-tooth necklace, a coral-studded helmet and collar, and a brass ornament on his hip. He holds a ceremonial sword and a spear (BSLOC_2017_16_1)
