Pocahontas sat for a painted portrait while in England 1616-17. From this first portrait, engravings were made, this one by Simon de Passe, German Anabaptist who moved to London in 1616. From the de Passe engraving, this later painted portrait was made with its current provenance dating back to the 18th century. This painting repeated an error in transcription which misidentifies her husband as Thomas Rolfe, instead of the correct John Rolfe
