The Politician, Dr. Benjamin Franklin. Engraving by Thomas Ryder, after British painting by Stephen Elmer. The 1782 publication of this print did not identify Benjamin Franklin as the subject. However, in 1815, a copy of the engraving was used as the frontispiece of an edition of The Life and Works of Benjamin Franklin. This identification was strengthened in 1824, when Ryders original plate was reissued with a new title: The Politician. Dr. Benj. Franklin
