Portrait of Sengbe Pieh/Joseph Cinque above a newspaper description of his ordeal. He led a mutiny on the slave ship La Amistad, on which his Mende tribesmen were destined for Caribbean plantations. The Africans took over the ship, and were boarded by a US Navy ship off eastern Long Island, New York in June 1839. Abolitionists funded their successful defense against murder charges and they were returned to their homeland in West Africa. In the 1997 film, AMISTAD, actor Djimon Hounsou portrayed Sengbe Pieh/Joseph Cinque
