President Anastasio Somoza was shot on Sept. 21, 1956 by the poet Rigoberto Lopez Porez. He died several days later in a Panama Canal Zone hospital. His older son, Luis Somoza, immediately succeeded him, to be followed by his brother Anastasio Somoza Jr. (CSU_2015_11_1428)
