Former President George Washington talking with two enslaved workers on the Mount Vernon plantation. Following the end of his second term as President, he retired from politics. When his will was read after his 1799 death, it freed his 123 slaves. The will also required the ex-slaves to be provided for, with the elderly ones to be clothed and fed, and the younger ones to be trained at an occupation to support themselves
