In his one term presidency, from 1845-1849, he settled the disputed Oregon Country with Britain, and added the ~Mexican Cession after victory in the Mexican"American War. He secured a substantial reduction of tariff rates, and reformed the Treasury system with a long term replacement for the Second Bank of the United States
