President and Julia Grant and their friends, General Babcock and his wife, at Gilbert Havens Marthas Vineyard cottage, in summer 1874. While Babcock was Grants trusted private secretary, secretly invested (and lost) in Jay Goulds gold cornering scheme in 1869. Later, he was part of the Whiskey Ring, in which government officiers and commercial distillers conspired to evade federal taxes on the whiskey.
