President M. Carey Thomas (center) of Bryn Mawr College, leading the academic procession at the celebration of Mount Holyoke Colleges, Founders Day, Oct. 7, 1921. She was the first woman and the first foreigner to receive a doctorate from the University of Zurich in 1882. Her pursuit of the degree was in part motivated to prove women were as intellectually capable as men. She served as president of Bryn Mawr College from 1894 to 1922
