Presidential campaign banner for the 1872 Liberal Republican Party. Horace Greeley was founder and editor of the New York Tribune, and his running mate, Benjamin Gratz Brown, Governor of Missouri. The ticket was supported by the Democratic party, but still lost in a landslide for Grant. Greeley died less than 3 weeks after the election, resulting in his 14 electors voting for Grant, rather than the candidate they were pledged to, who in this case was dead
