Previously enslaved African Americans in a cotton field on the Saint Helena Island, SC, 1863-66. Port Royal Experiment plantation superintendent, David Franklin Thorpe, is the man in a suit. He managed the abandoned plantation for the Federal Government and hired the workers. The workers wages are paid by selling the high quality Sea Island cotton.
