Previously enslaved African Americans in a cotton field on the Retreat Plantation, Port Royal Island, SC, 1863-66. The man standing at right is possibly the plantation superintendent, who managed the abandoned plantation for the Federal Government, and hired the workers. The cotton crop funded the workers wages.
