Progress of Cotton, Bobbin & Drawing Frames

British 1840s depiction the Progress of Cotton, by Richard Barfoot, 5 of 12. After the cotton is carded, it is processed in the Bobbin and Drawing-Frames. At far left, long rolls of carded cotton are drawn between sets of metal rollers, then drawn together, and loaded into the tall metal can. The Bobbin-Frame, (third machine from left) receives the Cotton in the metal can after drawing; here it passes between rollers similar to the first set in the Drawing-Frame, as set of Spindles, twists the Cotton, turning it into a soft string, which wraps around large Bobbins about nine inches long. The Jack-Frame, (second from left) in the picture, then carries on the process by working the slightly twisted string finer and tighter, and running it on Bobbins of smaller size
