Progress of Cotton, Spinning
British 1840s depiction the Progress of Cotton, by Richard Barfoot, 6 of 12. Spinning machines are attended by two women and a man as they create spun thread from cotton roving. A small girl works within the frame of the machine. The multi-spindle spinning frame, was one of the key developments in the industrialization of weaving. The technique was invented in 1764 by James Hargreaves, in Lancashire in England
