Promotional print for the agricultural fraternal
Promotional print for the agricultural fraternal organization, the Grange, short for National Grange of the Patrons of Husbandry, ca. 1873. The Grange was a farmers organization, initially formed to oppose the monopolistic practices of the railroads and grain elevators. Besides these middlemen, the federal governments monetary and tariff policies harmed the farm economy. Medallions surrounding the central scene, are idealized scenes of farming and rural life. In the top right is a scene of a Grangers meeting
