THE PURITAN, by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The artists original commission was to create a monumental sculpture of Deacon Samuel Chapin (1595"1675), one of the founding fathers of Springfield, Massachusetts. Saint-Gaudens wanted the statue to be an embodiment of the Puritan and their rigorous Calvinist religion. This statue is one of more than 40 smaller bronze versions cast in Paris in the 1890s
