THE PURSUIT, 1856, Nathaniel Currier lithograph after painting by Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait. Mounted Euro-Americans chase Indians through the tall grass of the Great Plains. In the foreground, a white frontiersman aims his revolver as he closes in on an Indian, who aims a spear at his pursuer. This is a clear depiction of an Indian riding on the side mount for protection by the body of his horse. He shifts his body to his mounts side, secured by his foot in a loop of rope attached to the girth rope behind the horses front legs
