Red River Carts were introduced to the Northern Plains Indians from French and Scottish models. They were named for the metis settlement on the Red and Assiniboine rivers in what is now Manitoba and North Dakota. metis were the descendants of marriages between Euro-American fur trappers and Native American women. The Red River Cart, constructed of wood and animal hide, with no metal parts, was designed with large wheels to travel the primitive roads of the northern fur hunting grounds
