Reverend Richard Mather, a Puritan minister, holds a bible and spectacles in a wood engraving by John Foster. In 1635 he emigrated with a party of Puritans bound for Boston and became a prominent Congregationalist cleric. His son, Increase Mather, and grandson, Cotton Mather, followed him as Puritan divines, He may be holding the Bay Psalm Book, 1640, which he co-authored
