He served as President Andrew Jacksons Attorney General and Secretary of the Treasury before Jackson nominated him to the court in 1836, where he would serve for 28 years. He delivered the majority opinion in Dred Scott v. Sandford (1857), ruling that African Americans could not be considered citizens
