Roger Sherman, by Ralph Earl, 1775, American painting, oil on canvas. The self-educated Sherman was trained to be a cobbler by his father. After he passed the bar in 1754, his law practice led him into colonial politics. At the Continental Congress he was on the drafting committees Declaration of Independence, 1776, and the Articles of Confederation, 1781. At the 1887 Philadelphia Constitutional, convention he defended the interests of small states, contributing to debates that shaped Connecticut Compromise. Sherman served in the first House of Representatives and later in the Senate as a Federalist
