Rosa Parks, sits at the front the bus, where seats were previously reserved for white riders, of Montgomery, Alabama, buses. The previous day, Dec. 20, 1956, the Alabama district court ordered compliance with the US Supreme Court ruling finding Montgomery's segregated bus system unconstitutional and illegal. A United Press International photographer, included UPI reporter, Nicholas C. Chriss, posing as an expressionless white passenger. There were no other passengers in the front of the bus when the iconic photo was taken (BSIC_2020_7_16)
