Rutherford Hayes, 18th President of the United States, serving from 1877 to 1881. Rutherford B. Hayes lost the 1876 general election by approximately 250, 000 popular votes, but the electoral vote was deadlocked by contested election in Florida, Louisiana, and South Carolina.
