Rutherford Hayes, 18th President of the United States, serving from 1877 to 1881. Rutherford B. Hayes lost the 1876 general election by approximately 250, 000 votes, but obtained an electoral college majority by means of the Great Compromise of 1877, which ended Reconstruction and military occupation of the post-Civil War South.
