SAINT ANSANUS, by Simone Martini, 1326, Italian Proto-Renaissance painting, tempera on wood. At age 19, Ansanus openly declared his Christian faith during the persecutions of Diocletian. As a prisoner in Siena, he preached and was decapitated by order of Roman Emperor Diocletian in 304. Ansanus became Sienas patron saint and holds its black and white banner (BSLOC_2017_16_63)
