Samuel Slater, memorized the machines that manufactured cotton in the 1780s, when an indentured apprentice in a British cotton mill. He emigrated to the US in at age 21, in 1789, and partnered with industrialist Moses Brown, modifying the British technology. In 1793, Slater and Brown opened their first textile factory in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. For his disclosure of secret British textile technology, he was called, Slater the Traitor, in Britain
