The second flag raising on Iwo Jima on Feb. 23, 1945. The photo was immediately recognized as an iconic image of World War 2. This larger flag replaced the first small one that could not be seen by the troops fighting below. Photo was taken by Joe Rosenthal on assignment with the Wartime Still Picture Pool.
