Second Seminole War, 1835-1842. THE MACON VOLUNTEERS, by Jackson Walker. The Georgia Battalion, including the Macon Volunteers of the Georgia Militia, assisted by a few artillerymen with a six-pound gun. They were assigned to guard and care for sick and wounded soldiers in the Withlacoochee Swamp in western Florida. The vulnerable group came under attack while building a fort for protection. They held out from February to April, when they were relieved. The image depicts close fighting with Seminole warriors between February to April 1836, before they were relieved
