Shays Rebellion mob in possession of a court house in 1786. The insurrections grievance was increased land taxes, when unpaid, resulted in confiscation of farms and businesses. The Shayites attacked courthouses where the seized property was auctioned in tax sales. Shays Rebellion took place in Western Massachusetts from Sept. 1786 and Feb. 1787. Illustration by Howard Pyle
