Both Sides of the Question is an 1868 political cartoon about the first Presidential election after the US Civil War. On right, are Republican candidates, Ulysses Grant and Schulyer Coxfax, accompanied by Union generals and politicians. At left are the Democratic candidates, Horatio Seymour and Francis Blair, with Confederate generals and politicians. Artist Thomas Nast leaves no doubt that both he, and Harpers Weekly, decry the possibility of a Democratic win. In the end, the popular vote was close, but the electoral vote clearly favored the Republican Grant, 214 to 80
