Slaves of Jefferson Davis arrive at Chickasaw
Slaves of Jefferson Davis arrive at Chickasaw Bayou from his Mississippi plantation, June-July 1863. During the Siege of Vicksburg, Union soldiers brought 137 of Davis slaves, to travel further, to the contraband camp at Vicksburg. They had been legally freed earlier, on Jan. 1, 1863, by the Emancipation Proclamation. Frank Leslies Illustrated Newspaper
