Sojourner Truth, was an African American evangelist, abolitionist, women's rights activist, and author. This photo was made after she moved to Battle Creek, Michigan where her daughters lived. By the time she was 16 years old, she had been sold four times. She gained her freedom in 1827, when New York State law required the emancipation of all slaves in the state
