Sojourner Truth was born as Isabella Baumfree, into slavery in New York State in 1797. After a succession of owners, she was legally freed by NY State emancipation laws in 1827. In her lap is a photograph of her grandson, James Caldwell, who served with the 54th Massachusetts Regiment, and survived being a POW at James Island, South Carolina during the Civil War
