South Carolina Senator Benjamin Ryan Tillman, c. 1905. He came of age during the Civil War and established his family during Reconstruction. He was a complex populist who fought the aristocracy for the poor white farmers. He was a rabid racist who also had close relationships with African American tenant farmers on his land (BSLOC_2017_8_82)
