S.S. Pere Marquette 18 passing State Street bridge, Chicago, Illinois, c. 1902-1910.The ship functioned as an excursion boat in the summers, and as a railroad car ferry for the remainder of the year. On Sept. 10, 1910, she sunk in high seas in the middle of Lake Michigan, taking 29 people down with her. Another 33 were saved when the S.S. Pere Marquette 17 responded to her distress call
