Steamboat turned troopship, Sultana on the Mississippi River before her boilers exploded, the ship burned, and she sank on April 27, 1865. The passengers included about 1, 880 Union soldiers heading home at the end of the Civil War. Deaths were estimated between 969 - 1238. Most of the military passengers were Union soldiers recovering from maltreatment at Confederate POW camps. More than 1, 100 of these men died in the disaster. Photo taken by Thomas W.
