Stock certificate of Marcus Garveys Black Star Line, an international shipping company, 1919. After Garveys Black Star Line suspended operations in 1922, the FBI indicted Garvey for using the mails fraudulently to solicit stock for the steamship line. He was convicted in 1923, imprisoned in 1925, and finally deported to Jamaica in 1927. Social critics argue that Garvey was prosecuted on a technicality because Whites feared his large following (BSLOC_2017_20_170)
