Teacher Laura M. Towne, a founder of the Penn School, with students Dick, Maria, and Amoretta. The school on Saint Helena Island, S.C. was founded during the Civil War for emancipated slaves in an area occupied by the United States Army. The Penn School served as a school, health agency, and cooperative society for rural African Americans of the Sea Islands until 1948
