Thomas Hart Benton, Democratic Senator from Missouri 1821 to 1851, in a daguerreotype by Mathew Brady, ca. 1850. He was a slave owner, but grew to oppose slavery after the Mexican"American War. His position that the Compromise of 1850 was too favorable to slavery, cost him his Senate seat. After election to Congress in 1852, he lost that seat in 1854, due to his opposition to the Kansas"Nebraska Act
